![]() ![]() So I would deduce that your watch is dated between 1904 and (maybe) 1907. ![]() So it may have been printed on the watch for a few years after it first came out, but after that a manufacturer wouldnt bother because the patent had been publicly displayed for long enough. I believe it was common practice to publish the date of the patent on the watch when it was first used, and for a period thereafter, to ensure that the patent would stick. You may try contacting the company to request the date it was made, through their website, linked to in the Zenith Encyclopedia article. I dont think that there is documentation for this make, linking movement serial numbers to dates. Need to look for a watch service in the city. This is because your movement was designed for a hunter case, although that has been switched to an open face. I have an almost identical movement (pictured below) from which you will see that your watch lacks the spring for the regulator adjustment. The Patent is by Georges Favre-Jacot (founder of Zenith) and it has something to do with setting the hands from the winding stem. The bow is reassuring stiff, just like it would have been in 1925. The case has a few marks on the back – this watch pre dates stainless steel – but they are light. The in house caliber N.V.S III is conventionally set and runs well. The Breguet style hands are straight and suit the Arabic numerals painted on the dial. The white dial is crisp and clean, with the 24 hour numbers and the logo printed in red. Sadly there is no trace of the supplying jeweller on Preston’s Friargate anymore, but we are talking nearly a hundred years ago so it is understandable. Zenith pocket watches would several later prizes too, but they are not mentioned) From the serial number on the movement we can date this watch to being made in circa 1925. On the dust cover is an inscription from the Grand Prix Paris 1900, but the watch is later than that (and it has nothing to do with F1 Grand Prix either – it is a prestigious award for the Grand Price (grand prix in French) at the Parisian World Exhibition. Still in the supplying jewellers box, this Zenith pocket watch is in good cosmetic and running order. ![]()
